A private alternative to WhatsApp family groups for photos and memories

By Zara Turner-Major, co-founder of Dear Moment. WhatsApp facts checked on 21 October 2026.

Short answer. If you want a WhatsApp family group alternative for photos, keep the group for chat and keep the photos somewhere else. WhatsApp is good for talking, and everyone already has it. It is a poor place to keep family photos: they sit on each person's phone, get buried under new messages, and can go with a lost phone if there is no recent backup. Dear Moment keeps the moments you choose on one private timeline, sorted by date. You choose who sees each moment, and family open it from a private link with no app or account. It costs $39.99/year after a 14-day free trial.

Why photos get lost in the family group chat

Family group chat photos get lost in a few ways. Most of them come from how WhatsApp stores chats.

  • They are stored on each phone. Backups go to your Google Account or iCloud, or to WhatsApp's own encrypted cloud storage, which is still rolling out. WhatsApp says it cannot restore chats for you.
  • A new phone needs a recent backup. You can restore only if chat backup was turned on, with the same phone number, and WhatsApp says a backup more than 120 days old may not restore. Each backup replaces the last one, and messages sent after the last backup can't be restored.
  • Videos need their own setting. Videos come back only if "Include videos" was turned on before the last backup.
  • New messages bury old photos. You can search a chat by keyword or date and filter by photos or videos, but a photo from two years ago is still hard to find among hundreds of others.
  • Disappearing messages delete them. If someone turns on disappearing messages in the group, new messages and photos go after 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days.

Everyone in the group sees everything

A WhatsApp group has one audience. If grandparents should see the children's photos but your cousins should not, you need a second group, and you post the same photo twice. You can end up with several groups, and the photos spread across them.

What WhatsApp does well

  • Everyone has it. There is nothing new to install or learn.
  • It is free, with calls and video calls.
  • Encrypted backups. You can turn on end-to-end encrypted backups, locked with a password or key.
  • Quick replies. A photo gets a reaction from the whole family in minutes.
  • HD photos. You can choose HD quality before you send.

Keep the group for talking, keep the moments somewhere else

A place to keep family moments needs things a chat doesn't have:

  • Order by date, so you can find a moment from any year.
  • A choice of who sees what, without a separate group for each audience.
  • Notes and voice with the photos, so the story stays with the picture.
  • Easy for grandparents, with nothing to set up.
  • A copy you can take with you, if you ever leave.

How Dear Moment works next to your family group

In Dear Moment, a moment can hold photos, videos, a written note and a voice note, which is transcribed for you. Everything goes on one private timeline, sorted by date, and you browse it by month. For each moment, you choose who sees it. Each person sees only what you shared with them.

Family open their private link in any browser, with no app and no account, and can get an email digest of new moments once a week. They can view and download, but only you add moments. Storage is unlimited, and there is no limit on family members. There are no ads, data is stored in the EU, and your memories are never used to train AI.

He was begging to get into water as soon as we arrived and wasn't afraid at all. Started splashing and laughing and enjoying it like he's done this for ages, even though that was his first time in the swimming pool.

The timeline, and one moment opened: photos and a voice note, written out for you.

Save the photos already in your group

  1. Turn on chat backup, with videos. In WhatsApp, open Settings, then Chats, then Chat backup. Turn on backups, and turn on the option to include videos.
  2. Check that the group's photos save to your phone. Media visibility (Android) and Save to Photos (iPhone) are on by default. In Group info, check that nobody turned them off for the family group.
  3. Check the backup date before you change phones. Messages sent after the last backup don't come back.
  4. Add the ones you want to keep. Add the photos that matter to Dear Moment as moments, with a note about what was happening.

What Dear Moment doesn't do

  • Chat or comments. Keep WhatsApp for that.
  • Posting by family. Only the account owner adds moments. Family view and download.
  • Text search. You browse your moments by month.
  • Unlimited moments for free. The free plan saves five moments. For more, a subscription starts with a 14-day free trial. The people you share with never pay.
  • A backup of your whole camera roll. You add the moments you want to keep. One moment holds up to 10 photos and 3 videos.

Other options

  • Another chat app, such as Signal or Telegram. Photos in a chat get buried there too.
  • A shared album, if you want every photo from everyone in one place. See Dear Moment vs iCloud Shared Albums and Dear Moment vs Google Photos.
  • Leaving Facebook too? See a private alternative to Facebook.

Questions

Is there an alternative to a WhatsApp family group?

For chatting, keep WhatsApp, because everyone already has it. For keeping photos and moments, a private family timeline such as Dear Moment works better: moments stay in one place by date, and you choose who sees each one.

Why did photos disappear from my WhatsApp group?

WhatsApp keeps chat history on your phone. Photos can go if the phone is lost or replaced without a recent backup, if videos were left out of the backup, or if someone in the group turned on disappearing messages.

Can I get back photos from a WhatsApp group after I lost my phone?

Only from a backup. WhatsApp says it cannot recover chats for you. If you had chat backup turned on, you can restore the last backup on a new phone with the same phone number. Messages sent after that backup cannot be restored.

Does Dear Moment replace WhatsApp?

No. Dear Moment has no chat. Keep the WhatsApp group for talking, and use Dear Moment to keep the moments you want to find again and share with the right people.

Do grandparents need to install anything?

No. Each person you share with gets a private link that opens in a browser, with no app and no account. They can also get an email digest of new moments once a week.

How much does Dear Moment cost?

$5.99/month or $39.99/year in the US, £5.99 or £39.99 in the UK, and €6.99 or €39.99 in euro countries, after a 14-day free trial. The people you share with don't pay anything.
